Updated: Jan 20, 2022 Wednesday, November 17th, marked the conclusion of Morehouse/Spellman’s second cohort for FGI AUC with the students at Kipp Atlanta Collegiate. This year we operated with a tutor team of 10, and we were able to mentor and educate 15 students from Kipp Atlanta Collegiate on the powers of investing and personal finance. During the program, we ensure our students have a foundational understanding of budgeting, stocks, portfolio development, and management by conducting immersive lessons and providing real world examples. Upon completing the cohort, students submit and present a personal portfolio, through which they strategically allocate 100 dollars to invest across a small selection of stocks and mutual funds. With the support of our Global Endowment Management, First Generation Investors is joyfully able to bring these investments to life by opening a custodial bank account and executing these trades on our students’ behalf. One of my favorite parts about FGI is that our discussions emphasize the relative importance of investing in our daily lives, not just with stocks. I often say, “WE’RE ALL INVESTORS,” and I truly take pride in being able to pass my knowledge to the next generation of students hungry for knowledge. I believe regardless of your age or what you study, you are still an investor - an investor of desire, an investor of love, and most importantly, an investor of time. To me, that’s what First Generation Investors is about, inspiring a generation to make decisions and choices as individual fiduciaries. Thus, as one of our students, Imani, said, “I would like to thank everyone that was a part of this program, especially those who were willing to teach and instill the importance of money. I recommend FGI to scholars interested in investing, saving, or who’d like a simple idea of how finance and the markets work. Ultimately, this program helped me realize how to make wise decisions.” Hearing feedback like this makes the experience all the more impactful. We observed some phenomenal presentations over dinner at Two Urban Links with Torrey from GEM. It is safe to say our students gained a foundational understanding of investing. It was touching to see our students breaking down their respective investment strategies and allocations, while elaborating on how FGI has impacted their lives. This was the first time many of our tutors interacted with our sponsor and it was amazing to see the natural integration and excitement Torrey has for FGI. After the dinner one of our tutors from Spelman, Sopia Ellis, spoke briefly about her time with the program, stating “I have enjoyed my experience with FGI because I’ve gotten to teach a younger audience about the importance of financial literacy. I didn’t have this in school, and I think this is a great opportunity to teach others about how to manage and grow money.” Overall, it was an absolute privilege to dine with Torrey while watching our hard working students deliver their capstone presentations. As a student myself, it has been motivational to see such growth in understanding, especially for those who’ve been with us now for two semesters. The discussions we engage in through our sessions are so rare, and I’m just glad we can bring it to these high school scholars. These young leaders of tomorrow have come a long way in learning ‘the language of the street,’ and they’ve taken a significant stride in their journey through the ownership economy.
Truthfully, it all could have never been possible without the help of our volunteers and supporters. Given that, I’d like to give a big thanks to The FGI Program, our tutors, our sponsors, and of course, our students for answering the call today and being the investors of tomorrow! Zachariah C.
